On February 2, 1902, in the bustling city of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China, the story of Professor You Pengxi began. Amidst a period of significant social and political upheaval, his early life was marked by displacement and resilience. The son of a university-educated customs official, You Pengxi's family sought refuge from the turmoil of the 1911 Revolution, moving first to Hankou and later to Shanghai. These formative experiences shaped his path towards becoming a distinguished physician and martial artist.
Educated in Shanghai and then in Hankou at a prestigious German-Chinese middle school, You Pengxi developed a keen interest in medicine and languages. This interest led him to Tongji Medical College, where he distinguished himself in dermatology and gynecology, earning his medical degree with honors. His quest for knowledge took him to Germany, where under the mentorship of renowned specialists, he deepened his expertise, particularly in gynecology at the University of Heidelberg Medical School. Returning to China, Professor You Pengxi dedicated his career to teaching and practicing dermatology, contributing significantly to medical education at Tongde Medical College and Southeast Medical College, and later, leading the Dermatology Department at Shanghai First People’s Hospital. Parallel to his illustrious medical career, Professor You Pengxi pursued martial arts with fervor. Initially training in Shaolin boxing in Shanghai, his life journey led him to Germany and then back to China, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of a famous Shaolin Master Mi Jian Hua. However, it was his encounter with Master Wang Xiangzhai that transformed his martial arts practice. Under Wang Xiangzhai, he explored the depths of internal martial arts, focusing on Zhan Zhuang, or standing meditation, a practice that would become central to his development as both a martial artist and a devout Buddhist.
Standing meditation became the foundation of Professor You Pengxi's spiritual and physical regimen, embodying the principles of stillness, balance, and internal strength. This practice was not just a martial technique but a profound spiritual discipline, reflecting his devotion to Buddhism and the martial arts. His commitment to this path was further deepened by his time spent in the mountains with Gara Lama Nora Rinpoche. For three years, three months, and three weeks, he immersed himself in intensive meditation and training, achieving a level of spiritual insight that allowed him to transcend traditional sleep, thus replacing it with meditation.
This transformative experience marked a significant milestone in Professor You Pengxi's journey, illustrating the unparalleled heights of spiritual and physical mastery attainable through dedicated practice. His approach to martial arts, influenced by his time with Wang Xiangzhai and Gara Lama Nora Rinpoche, emphasized the harmony of mind, body, and spirit, guided by the principles of internal strength and qi energy. His teachings, inspired by his profound experiences and insights, stressed the importance of health, longevity, and the cultivation of a peaceful and compassionate heart. Professor You Pengxi's legacy is a testament to the power of integrating deep spiritual practice with martial arts, offering a holistic path to well-being and enlightenment:
"Great physical strength overcomes small strength. Internal strength defeats physical strength. Qi subdues internal strength. Strong Qi dominates weak Qi. Infinite kindness disarms them all."
Through his life's work, Professor You Pengxi exemplifies the essence of a true healer and spiritual practitioner, bridging the worlds of medicine, martial arts, and Buddhism with grace and wisdom.
